In addition to the Core Curriculum, Cobains Primary School offers a range of enrichment programs & extra curricular activities.
Weekly Art lessons are conducted for all students throughout the year with a wide range of activities and skills undertaken. We also utilise the "Artist in Residence" programs and present work in the Sale Show annually at a very high standard.
Students are provided with music lessons each week. Our program develops all relevant areas of the music domain through learning the specific elements of music. Students in grades 3-6 have performed regularly in the Sale Eisteddfod and every two years in the State School Spectacular with terrific results.
The school holds an End of Year Concert in which all students have the opportunity to take part. Parents are invited to attend the concert and celebrate the end of the school Year.
Chinese has been recently introduced as an additional language in the Prep, 1 and 2 classes. Students learn Mandarin in class via Skype.
A vegetable garden provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of where our food comes from and how much more flavoursome and healthy home grown produce can be. There is always a lot of interest in collecting the eggs from the chicken coup and then using them in a pancake breakfast or in other creative ways.
Servicing the rural schools with weekly visits is the MARC (Mobile Area Resources Centre) van. These visits are very popular with both students and staff. The teacher librarian provides lessons with a literature base, as well as book borrowing opportunities. Stock in the van is regularly rotated and updated so there is always something exciting in store. Requests can be made for particular books and resources to be brought to the school the following week.
All children receive a comprehensive program in developing physical skills, with the provision of class lessons, including the Perceptual Motor Program provided in Prep, one and two class. During Term 4, all grades will have 6 sessions at the Maffra Gymnastics Club facility, with trained gymnastics instructors and world class equipment. Swimming lessons are provided at the Sale Pool by Kemp Aquatics in Term 2.
An intensive swimming program runs in Term 2 for all students at the Sale Indoor Pool. Parents are informed early in the year of the details and cost. All parents are encouraged to attend, especially parents of prep students to assist and support their child in this important program.
Competitive sports are held throughout the year, including events in swimming, cross country running and athletics. Affiliation with School Sports Victoria enables Years 3-6 students to progress through from district to state and even national levels of competition. Students also have opportunities to develop skills and compete at high levels in a range of sports.
Cobains offers a camping program for all students from grade 3 to 6 with the Sale Rural Cluster Schools. Combining with our cluster of 8 rural schools reduces the cost of the program to parents and plays an instrumental role in aiding transition and further socialisation skills for our students. Payment plans are available and School Council provides a generous subsidy per participant to ensure all eligible students can participate in this terrific experience.
Cobains Primary students participate in a Bike Education program. Our school also competes in the Wellington Bike Ed Challenge and triathlon in alternate years.
